NASHVILLE — A local man completed a 38-minute video essay Thursday evening on the collapse of sustained attention in modern life.
Ryan Beck, 33, watched the video at 1.75x speed, reducing the runtime to approximately 22 minutes.
He paused twice: once to check a notification and once to open a second screen.
“It was really eye-opening,” Beck said. “I think about it a lot.”
“We've lost the ability to sit with something,” he said, scrolling.
Beck said the essay had prompted him to consider a digital detox, which he researched for six minutes before finding a longer video on the same subject.
He has saved that video to a playlist containing 214 items.
The playlist is titled “Watch Later.”
Beck said he intends to get to it this weekend.
