TOLEDO, Ohio — A local couple said they became concerned this month after their 19-year-old son began referring to his bedroom as “the trading floor.”

The terminology reportedly emerged in July and became standard by August.

“He said he was heading to the floor,” his mother said. “He meant upstairs.”

The room contains a desk, two monitors, a chair purchased secondhand and laundry that family members date to June.

“There is no floor,” his father said. “There is carpet, and we can't see it.”

The son declined a formal interview, citing an active session, but said the description was accurate in function if not in scale.

He noted that his hours are longer than those of a conventional exchange and that no one rings a bell.

His parents said they have not objected to the arrangement so much as the vocabulary, which now includes the words desk, book, and risk committee.

The risk committee is him.
