WASHINGTON — Household budgeting specialists this week outlined a strategy for reducing financial stress that requires no software, no spreadsheet and no change in spending.

The approach involves not opening the credit card statement.

“Stress is often triggered by information,” one specialist explained. “Removing the trigger produces measurable relief.”

Practitioners describe the method as immediate in effect and temporary in duration.

“The statement will still be there,” the specialist said. “But it will be there later.”

Under the recommended protocol, the envelope is placed on a surface near the door and covered with a second, less important envelope.

Digital users are advised to close the notification without reading past the first line.

The strategy is not recommended for those seeking to reduce debt, improve credit or plan for the future.

It is recommended for Tuesdays.
