MINNEAPOLIS — A remote employee received a strong annual performance review this month following a year of consistent mouse movement.
Greg Hansen, 41, maintained an active status indicator for an estimated 96 percent of business hours, according to internal records.
The review praised Hansen's reliability, responsiveness and “excellent availability.”
It did not mention output.
“Greg is always there when you need him,” his manager said.
Hansen said he attributes the result to a disciplined routine, which includes shifting his cursor at eight-minute intervals and typing the word “Thanks” in three channels each morning.
He noted that the interval was arrived at experimentally.
“Ten minutes was too long,” he said.
Hansen received a merit increase of 3 percent and a note describing him as the backbone of the team.
