SEATTLE — A local man purchased $300 running shoes last week and has since announced plans to begin walking more.

Peter Nowak, 42, said the purchase was an investment in a long-term change in habits.

“If you're going to do it, do it right,” Nowak said.

The shoes, described in reviews as a competition-grade racing model, remain in their box in a hallway closet.

“I'm waiting for the right conditions,” he said.

Nowak said he does not intend to run initially, citing the importance of building a base. The base will consist of walking.

He has downloaded two applications to track the walking and has not opened either.

Nowak's previous purchase in this category, made in 2023, is currently used for mowing the lawn.

He said this time is different because the shoes were expensive.
