COLUMBUS, Ohio — A local man cancelled an $8 monthly streaming subscription Tuesday as part of what he described as taking control of his finances.

Eric Salas, 39, completed the cancellation in under four minutes, navigating three retention offers and a survey.

“It adds up,” Salas said. “That's ninety-six dollars a year.”

Approximately ninety minutes later, Salas ordered lunch for delivery at a total cost of $31, including fees, service charge and tip.

“That's different,” he said. “That's food.”

Salas said he intends to review his remaining subscriptions this week, a review he has scheduled twice.

He estimated his total monthly recurring charges at “maybe forty dollars.”

The actual figure, according to his statement, is $214.

Salas said the turnaround remains in its early stages.
