ST. LOUIS — A local investor said Friday that his recent losses were “only on paper,” then declined to discuss the paper.

Mark Ellison, 45, has held the position since February. Its value has declined by an amount he described as irrelevant until realized.

“It's not a loss until you sell,” Ellison said.

Asked whether he had reviewed his most recent statement, Ellison said he had received it.

“It's on the counter,” he said.

The envelope has remained on the kitchen counter for eleven days, according to family members, who have moved it twice during cleaning without opening it.

Ellison said he prefers to evaluate performance on a longer horizon and does not believe monthly reporting reflects underlying value.

He was unable to state the current value of the position.

He was able to state its value in February.
