BELLEFONTE, Pa. — A second stop sign installed at the corner of Maple and Third has divided residents along lines that observers described as entirely predictable.
The sign was approved in June following a petition signed by nine people and opposed by eleven.
“There was never a problem here,” one resident said. “Now there's a sign.”
Supporters cited visibility. Opponents cited tradition. Both groups referenced the same intersection, which sees an estimated forty vehicles per day.
“We know how to drive on this street,” a longtime resident said.
A public comment period drew eighteen speakers, four of whom addressed the sign.
The remaining comments concerned a separate matter involving a fence.
Township officials said the sign will remain in place and that a review is scheduled for next year.
Traffic has adapted, with the exception of one driver who continues to treat it as advisory.
